My First Official Art Prize

The Coolamon Up-2-Date store, located right next to Coolamon library hosted their annual art exhibition last Friday.  I submitted five of my drawings of Arthur's head.

I was awarded my first ever art prize which was the 2011 CSU Annual Perpetual Art Prize.  As a result I have begun adding zeroes to the price tags of my work.

ROAD TRIP!

I called the mechanic and discovered that my car was fixed and ready to go. Shortly after, the courier arrived apologetically with my package and then my dad called to help me book a room to stay in Seymour for the night. I am delivering my work to the Seymour Farming Expo and by golly gosh it will be the best exhibition times a million.

FRASER STUDIO OPEN DAY!

   Open Day

This Saturday July 17 Fraser Studio is opening its doors to the public for an open day of the visual art residencies.  The artists will be present to meeet and greet from 1-5, myself included.  I'll be there painting and drawing ears and trying to catch unsuspecting visitors to model for me.  If you're coming please bring some blokes to model as I still have a greater number of women in the study and although women are tip top and great, I really want an even sexed balance.

This is the perfect time and place to come and be a part of AuralDynamics if you haven't modelled your ear yet.  There is a lot going on at Fraser on the day and for those people who are self conscious, come and check out all the different ears there are and you might find that your ear hang-ups are nothing to worry about.

I will also have Les Acoustrements for sale.  Les Acoustrements is a guide to AuralDynamics and deals with the notion of cosmetic aural augmentation.  There are only a few copies left but you might be able to get one if you're quick.

For additional motivation the massive annual Underbelly Arts festival will be holding its finale at the same time at Fraser Studios on the bottom floor.  I'm expecting a busy day with a festive vibe and lots of interesting things for the public.  I've only seen them setting up some labs so far and I have no idea what to expect.

I am at 10 Kensington St, Chippendale from 1-5pm this Saturday.  Visit me up on level 2, say hi and give me your ear if I haven't drawn it yet.

Australia's Special Broadcasting Service has for a long time had a relationship with Foxtel's World Movies Channel andhas recently branched out with an arts channel called STVDIO. Stvdio is devoted to the arts in all forms and handles different sectos of the arts on different days of the week so that perfomrnace, painting, music composition etc are represented. I wish I had cable for this reason.

The STVDIO online crew invited me to be a one of their weekly features of artist studios for their website so Website Coordiantor Nicolette Lorraway and talented photographer Lucien Alperstein came to my studio space in Fraser Studios to see how I worked and to check out the great rustic building and heritage elevator which inspires my work. Lucien (photographer) donated his ear to AuralDynamics.

NEW STUDIO PICS

Thanks to everyone who has modeled their ear so far. This project now has a HQ at Fraser Studio in Chippendale, which is just next to the Clare Hotel and really close to Central Station. I have a spare chair here specifically for people to come and model their ears and if you haven't already please do.

This studio residency will be finished in the first week of August and the exhibition of this project will follow really soon after so make sure you get over here before you forget.

I'll be here most days working on this project but will sometimes have to run out and about getting supplies - food, ink and fresh underwear so if your are going to swing around I would encourage you to left me know via SMS or on facebook or twitter or whatever so that I can make sure that I'm there.

If I am there and you want me to come and let you in just yell from outside the front door because I'm at the street window two floors up and I'll be able to hear anyone trying to get my attention. I don't think you'd be able to get into the studio if I'm not there.

On the last Sunday of every month from 1 - 4pm Fraser Studio hosts an open day where all the artists will be here either at work or with their work on display. At these times I will definately be here and more than happy to draw ears then.

REMEMBER - if you model your ear you will get a free print of it.

MEMIUM: VINYL

150 artists have been recruited in what appears will be a phenomenal exhibition featuring some great talent from me, Rebecca Murphy, Little Gonzalez, Georgie Pollard, Dominic Proust, and much much more. There will be a vinyl market also. I'm expecting the attendence would be about 6 x the number of artists + 50.

Comb Filtered, 2010.

Comb Filtered is a product of ongoing research into the individual differences of sense organs. Having worked on comparative anatomy of ears in Sydney for the last few months I have noticed a broad range of ear shapes, sizes and contours. Comb Filtered is named after a process of equalisation that recording producers use to shape the overall colour of a musical recording – highlighting certain frequency ranges and dulling others. Similarly that is the role of the outer ear. The differences in ear shape result in different types of comb filtering. Our bodies, from the outside, are shaping how we observe the world around us from sense to sense.

Medium Vinyl is an upcoming exhibition at Hardware Gallery opening on May 21 from 6-8pm

I'm in Vogue Living This Month

Check it out on page 204 in this months issue of vogue living. There's a photo of myself, Sonya Gee and Michael Reid among a bunch of other photos from the Art Month Sydney launch party. The photo credits me as an arts writer. I think Michael and I look Gangsta.

AuralDynamics HAS A HOME

I've been trying to find a home for AuralDynamics for the last few months and I landed one with a Fraser Studios Residency. This means for the three months following May 10, I will be a resident at Fraser Studios at Kensington St in Chippendale (right next to the Clare Hotel).

I'll still be drawing lots of ears, at least another 200. My plan is to have anyone who wants to participate to come to the studio. Vote on the poll to the left to let me know which days or nights you would be inclined to model (if any).

I was chuffed to hear that my application was assessed by quite a high profile line-up of judges: Amber McCulloch (British Council), Anthony Whelan (Breenspace) and Kiersten Fishbourne (City of Sydney)

I'm not sure how much I can say about the residency at this time other than it will go for three months and start on May 10.

I'll be back soon to talk about an upcoming exhibition at Hardware Gallery, Medium Vinyl.
